There are seeds sown, leaving potential for book two, but I really appreciated how the focus was on the world and the problems at hand. Unlike Red Queen, there is little romance in Realm Breaker. It takes 100 or so pages for it all to fall into place, so push through. It took me a while to sort out all of the names and terms, which resulted in me not becoming too invested in the beginning because I was trying to piece everything together. The magic system was so intriguing, although a little complex for the first half of the book. The world building was expansive, and the quest takes readers across different lands and cities, allowing us to explore various aspects of the world.

Andry and Erida offered my favourite points of view. There is such variety that you are guaranteed to find one to root for. The characters are brave, cunning, timid and ruthless. With a large cast, Aveyard excels at writing a compelling quest that combines everything I love – pirates, politics and magic. We also follow Andry, a squire, amongst others. Corayne, a pirates daughter, is dragged into a quest with Domacridhan (Dom) and Sorasa to find the Spindleblade and stop Taristan from ending the world. What happens when the hero’s fail? Realm Breaker sets out to answer that question. If you’re looking for an interesting magic system, found family, court intrigue, pirates and immortals then you’re in luck.
